I guess I had a brain infarction. The mess up is in the first sentence of
the original post.

"I have two stereo VCR'S connected. VCR 1 is an older Sears 2 head unit,
VCR 2 is a newer, 4-head unit."

If you switch the designation, everything else fits. VCR 1 is the newer
unit.
