This was a common problem with earlier DVD drives on computers that
used hardware decoding. The DVD image was actually overlayed onto the
monitor (you will recognize it because the TV will just show a
solid-color window where the video should be).

If your laptop is newer, you should be able to disable this and tell it
to use software decoding instead (you'll need a software player like
"PowerDVD" or "Win DVD" to do this).
