There's a couple tools out there.

DVDInfoPro
Nero Info Tool
DVD Decrypter - not an info tool as such, but does tell you things like
firmware.

Upgrading firmware allows improvements in writing, speed, compatibility. In
some cases it fixes problems with the burner. Depending on your burner, the
manufacturer usually list what improvements the firmware offers.
