If you provide more details, someone might be able to help you. Also
the peeps in alt.home-theater.misc might know more.
FYI, I hook up my HP Notebook zt1000 and Mac Mini to my TV with S-Video
(with DVI-to Video adapter) and the quality is pretty good, though
probably better from the Mini. It really depends on the encoding of the
AVIs in question, I've found. For example, 700 MB encodes of DVD movies
sometimes look terrible when blown up to TV size. If that's the case,
1400 MB encodes would be a better option, especially on movies over two
hours.
If the quality bothers you too much, you might want to look into a TV
with a DVI or HDMI connection and add that capability to your computer
hardware configuration.
