I've been a Netflix user for nearly 6 years now. I've suffered through
their slow turn-around times and seen numerous methods they tried to
protect disks (a few came wrapped in soft or hard styrofoam!)
I've had few problems. Yes, you occsaionally get a scratched disk. My
6+ year-old player still handles them fairly well. If there is too much
of a problem, you can have it exchanged within a day or two.
I've had fewer problems with cracked disks. I had a rash a few years
ago, but that was due to the mailboxes at a former apartment having
opening that were just a bit too small for the disk to fit. The mailman
was slighly bending them to fit them in. I was eventually able to bend
the edge a bit so they could fit them in without bending. I once got a
dual-sided disk with one side cracked. Luckily, the good side was the
widescreen version.
Also, you may lose one once in awhile, although I think it's been over
a year since that's happened to me. If you or they don't receive
something within a few days, you mark it as lost. As long as you do
don't get too many in a short time, nothing bad happens. In fact, after
several months, they disappear from the lost list.
So far, I think I've only gotten one wrong movie, and that was the
disk itself, not the sleeve.
