It is possible for the Panasonic DMR models E50, E80, and E85 and
perhaps later models to enter an endless Self Check loop when
a record error happens on the optical drive. I had a hell of
a time getting the disk out of the drive.

I called Panasonic and got the recommended method:
With power to the unit press Power on the front panel
until the machine turns off. Hold the STOP and Channel UP
buttons on the front panel until the drive kicks out the
disk.

Good information to add to your Panasonic manual.
