A friend of mine has a Sony DVD Recorder that records directly to DVD, and
the dvd plays back fine, good quality, however, they will not play on any
other dvd player (only Sony). They will not play in a computer. I use a
ati capture card hooked directly to the digital cable box, and capture
flawless video files in MPG2, using Win Producer, and produce a dvd using
The Same Win Producer program. The dvd+R plays on almost all other dvd
players I have tried it on, even those in autos.
For my 2 cents worth, I would say if compatibility of the recorded media is
a issue, use the capture card. It you are only going to view the dvd's on
the machine that recorded them, the Sony is a simple choice, especially if
you dont like fooling with computers.
The computer capture card takes a little longer, since first you capture the
video (Win DVD has a timer to shut off the record on elapsed time), so you
dont have to watch the program you are capturing, but then you do have to
produce a dvd, and it takes a few extra minutes to do this.
