I thought I read that someone had software that could be used to
configure the drive internally, and bitsetting was one of the
parametets that could be set. But I do not remember which drive it

I am currently using L&D 1.W8 in my 3540. I use it primarily to defeat
Riplock and for the Z-CLV burn strategy for 8x TY +R discs. It also
supports bitsetting.

Check rima.com and supermediastore.com.
The NEC 35xx series drives seem to favor +R discs based on the
experience of CDFreaks. Taiyo Yuden is the hands-down favorite. Check
