Try a different brand disc. The old media may have gone bad for that
drive.
You must match the drive, firmware and media in an exhausting sequence
of trial and error, or you can consult CDFreaks and get their
recommendation, which they discovered by exhausting trial and error.

You probably should get a new burner anyway since the one you have is
a bit old. But try it in another computer before reinstalling XP.
