This isn't a new practice. Studios have been doing this from time to
time for at least a couple of years now. I can remember New Line doing
this with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre(2003 remake). Warner Bros. has
just been doing it A LOT lately, so it's more noticable. I suspect the
featureless, single-disc versions are intended for the rental market.
