I'll answer. Your very quote from the manual: "Viewing pictures
recorded on a tape or live from your camcorder - USB
streaming" tells you the whole story. PICTURES. Not Movies.

Many people the world over have used firewire to transfer DV to
their computer. I happen to use DVIO which works very well on
slow computers. A firewire card costs 15 bucks in toronto.
a cable costs 10. there. you have the answer. altho i wouldn't
buy sony again, it's because of the stupid usage of a propriatary
memory stick. that's silly and expensive. other than that,
they're fine.
