Funny that you should mention Marv Soloff - his was a real jerk's answer
to the first question (Why is the Philips DVP 642 so big?) that I have
ever posted to this newsgroup.

In the same thread, Biz was superficially correct, but hardly helpful.
"You've got a circuit board, power supply, the back
panel has to be big enough to carry all the connecters, adn the front panel
needs to be big enough for a proper display, plus all the buttons....If its
too big, buy another player"

Hey, Biz, *ALL* DVD players have the items you mentioned. So that is a
crappy non-answer as to why the Philips is so big.

In case anyone knowledgeable reads this, I was wondering if the Philips
DVP 642 possibly had a better layout as far as heat dissipation, or maybe
had more chips than some other DVD players - you know, the kind of thing
that might have some relation to quality or reliability.
