DVD media is a statistical matter nowadays. What used to be good is
not so good now. For example, Mitsubishi Verbatim used to be highly
rated but nowadays 12 coasters per 90 burns is not anyone's idea of
good media. The pressure to compete in this emerging market creates
growing pains - and it now it's Caveat Emptor.

The CDFreak consensus, for the most popular drives, is that the best
statistics are with Taiyo Yuden. A clear majority of voters, 57% of
744, say TY is number one. Second is Mitsubishi Verbatim at 17% and
third is Ritek at 6%. All the rest is basically crap.

So if you have developed a low-tolerance policy with DVD media, as I
have, the odds are significantly in your favor with TY. That does not
mean you should not consider other brands, only that you better know
what you are doing if you do.

Most posters who ask about media quality are not skilled enough at
this stage so I try to get them started with the best chance of
initial success. After they develop some skills, if ever, they can
experiment and post their experiences on CDFreaks.
