 There's the problem. Sony.

I had a Sony DRU 530A. About 3 out of 10 disks would fail to rerip and
 freeze on playback.

 I got a Pioneer 107 - problems went away.

Recently I did a trade with someone who is using a Sony. Out of the 14 disks
he sent me, 10 were completely f**ked.

You should have no such problems with your NEC. But you may not be able to
rip your old Sony burned disks.

A quick way to test all your disks is to use DVD Shrink quick analysis.

You need to erase all data in
 "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\DVD Shrink"

Then start putting in your DVDR's, Shrink will do a quick analysis on each
one. If there's a problem with the disk - it'll showup here. If the quick
 analysis completes - you're okay.
