Your VCR is getting a bogus time/date from some external
source. Here in the USA, the public broadcasting stations
traditionally send a vertical-interval time signal which
VCRs use for automatic settings. It is not uncommon for the
local station to have something go wrong and to be sending
out incorrect data (or no data at all) until someone notices
and manages to reach an engineer at the station and convince
them to reset the service. It has happened in my city more than
 once.

I'm sure a few minutes of internet searching will reveal how
the system works in NZ and who your local source is.
