Don't worry about it - TY makes good discs no matter which type. I
have used TY -R and TY +R with equal success. Now that -R are somewhat
cheaper than +R, I am going to use -R. Rima.com has the best deal
right now: 100 -Rs 8x (TYG02) for $32.

Regarding your tests, first check out the forums on CDFreaks.

as well as the product reviews.

CD-DVD Speed is not very friendly towards NEC drives. The only reason
to get +R is the claim that they give slightly better quality scans.

You want to burn 8x at 8x and 16x at 12x. You want to scan at 4x (the
latest version of Speed only has 5x, so use it.)

Do not pay any attention to PIE or Quality Score for the NEC. Use the
PIF errors to decide. Also, use Transfer Rate test. But do not use the
computer in any way during any of these tests or you will glitch the
results. Also make sure the test disc is absoluely clean - no dust
whatsoever. I keep a can of compressed gas handy to clean discs.
