I too am disappointed in Panasonic over the most recent years.

There was a time 15 years ago when Panasonic ruled the VHS market,
including professional broadcast. Sony owned component video but could
not topple Panasonic in VHS.

I bought Panasonic 4 head units that would last for years under some
of the worst beating anyone could give a VCR. But the last one I
bought a couple years ago was bad out of the box and I had to replace
it. Then it started going bad in a year and I managed to squeeze
another year of substandard performance out of it. I also have a
Sympony (Best Buy store brand) that I bought before the Panasonic and
it still works.

I recommend the ILO DVDR05MU1 for $99 at WalMart. Get the latest
firmware from tech support and it will play AVI/MPEG-4 files.
