In what format are your subtitles? Standalone file in either .srt or
..sup format, or embedded directly into the AVI? If directly embedded,
you might get better results after extracting them with something like
subripper, <http://www.divx-digest.com/software/subripper.html>. Worst
case, you might at least be able to better manage their timing by
using any text editor on the extracted subs.
