Hey, all.
I've been a buyer of Toshiba DVD players for years; I really prefer
their image quality.
But, the player I have does not play all disk formats, nor MPEG2/AVI
files. For compatibility, I have the Phillips 642.
My 'benchmark' for video quality is one particular scene from one
particular movie: the scene in Fifth Element where Leeloo first wakes
up in her 'regeneration chamber'. There's one shot from the inside of
the chamber, showing the curved surfaces of the end of the chamber. On
my Phillips, it's all pixel-y and jaggy; on the Toshiba it's perfectly
smooth.
Cabling doesn't help - I tried the same set of component cables on both
players, and the difference is still dramatic on my 52" TV.
So: is there a good quality AND versatile player out there, which will
handle all the new file formats like XVID and DIVX, and still produce a
picture on par with the Toshiba?
Oh - and my current Toshiba cost me $150; the Phillips was $60. I don't
want to break the bank here. ;-)
Thanks for any opinions!
