You are correct!

I understand the Pioneer '433' (80GB) Recorder is region 2 and 533 is
region 1.

A multi-region version is on sale in UK for just a few pounds more but
few seem to want this for domestic use.

Importing from USA to Europe is not cost-effective. Therefore, if we pay
$390 (equivalent) in UK for a Pioneer 80GB we think we have a good deal.
