The same thing happened to me on my Pioneer DVD recorder. 
In my case I'm certain that the batteries in the remote control went 
flat so nothing worked when I was in the middle of editing a video. I 
knew that their was not much life left in the remote control batteries 
as I somtimes had to press a control button more than once before it 
would work.. 
I made the mistake of pulling uot the power plug as this caused hard 
drive problems just like it did in your case. 
I was lucky to have a lot of blank DVD-RW discs and used the one touch 
copy button to copy all the programs from the hard drive before 
initializing the hard drive again. It took only a few seconds to 
initialize the hard drive on the DVD recorder so I don't think the 
hard drive is re-formatted. I was pleased that the DVD recorder 
allowed me to copy my programs off the hard drive.
