Don't touch Sony with a bargepole - of all the brands, they have, in my
experience, been the least flexible. sony are too locked into copy
protection on all their products to be any good. Panasonic is almost as bad.
Trust the less-well knowm Japanese brands such as Ronin. I have also had
good results with Chilli and Nissan DVD players. Sometimes, you can get a
manufacturer's flash upgrade to solve problems.

Where flexibility is concerned, cheapest is best, but read the
specifications - if it doesn't specifically say that it will play certain
types of discs, then it probably won't. I have relatively expensove
Panasonic and Sony players that will play sfa and $40 players that play
everything!

The spec. should cover, ideally, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, VCD, SVCD, CD, CD-R,
CD-RW, DivX, MPEG4 and MPEG4 Nero Digital. (MPEG4 Nero is the most elusive -
Nero publishes a list of compatible players.) It must also specify that it
is multi-regional. The spec. should not be limited to playing only certain
brands of discs.

The motto is RTFS - read the flaming specification.

I speak as one who has had his fingers burned several times by trusting the
salesman, or loose statements like '--this machine will play almost anything
you throw at it.
