I agree with you on both points - it plays any variant of MPEG i've
tried, plus all the AVI variants (haven't tried Quicktime ;-) ). And
yes, I've put these files on CD-Rs and on DVD+/-Rs. So long as it can
read the disk media, it should be able to get to the files and play
them fine.

As to quality - yeah, it's pretty marginal. Very jaggy. My last two
'real' burners have been Toshibas, which have had much better codecs
than the 642.

So I run both - the Toshiba for my 'real' movies, and the Philips for
the movie files - which don't suffer as much from the loss of image
quality because they weren't as good quality to begin with.

I started another thread not long ago, looking for a good quality and
very compatible player, and was advised to try the Pioneer DV-588.
Haven't done so as yet. At this point I really don't mind using two
players. Just have to remember to switch my universal remote to CD
instead of DVD when I want to use the 642. ;)
