I discarded my DVD player and use a small PC
connected to my large screen TV to play DVDs, etc.
I use a wireless mouse to control things.

The main reason that I use a PC rather than a DVD player,
is that I have many disks with audio and video in many formats
such as VCD, DVD, RM, WMV, MOV, MPEG, MP3, etc.,
and I can play all of them with the computer.

For example, I have many disks
which hold 20 or so old movies each in various RM formats,
(Charley Chaplin, Shirley Temple, etc. ),
and this saves converting them to other formats,
and reburning them.

Media Player Classic seems to have all of the
necessary CODECs to play all of the formats,
and even Real Player can't play all of their own formats.

With this scheme,
you can fill up a disk with pictures,
( Or view the pictures from directly from a hard drive.)
and use any slideshow player to view the pictures.

I might mention that I use Picasa to
scan through, select, and assemble a batch of pictures
to work with. ( Make a video, or email somone pictures.)
