I used this application to accomplish the same task you're wanting from VHS
tape, not sure of its DVD capability but perhaps worth a look anyway;

....you're given the opportunity to utilize the application 30 times I think
before making the decision to buy or not. The link also presents you with
numerous other applications along the same vein.
