Recording from what?

Numerous programs have "DU meters". One is AudioGrabber...

Many (including AudioGrabber) provide easy access to Windows Volume
Control (which is what is used to control gain). The only one I can
think of that lets you manipulate gain (via WVC) directly from within
the program is LPRecorder. (There are probably others, just don't come
to mind at the moment).

One nice feature of LPRecorder is that you can set gain at 100% and play
whatever you want to record without actually recording...LPRecorder will
automatically adjust gain downwards if necessary so that no clipping
occurs. Once you have played the piece and gain has been adjusted for
it, record.

Just thought of another with meter and gain control - GoldWave.
