One trick that is supposed to allow bookmarks is to convert mp3 to Apple
m4a format using itunes, then rename the m4a extension to m4b. However,
the ipod also allows bookmarks for podcasts that are transmitted and
maintained in mp3 format. Is there some way to access this feature?

Apparently some players from other manufacturers allow bookmarking mp3
files at the user's (rather than the manufacturer's) option.
