I have copied dozens and dozens of VHS tapes to -R discs (at EP, 6
hour mode) and I can't tell the difference.

Also almost no duds.

I also have 15 -RW discs that I use to make daily programs from TV
and only one had a bad spot when I got it. They look just like the
tapes when I play them back (6 hour mode).

My recorder is an Emerson.

It sounds like your recorder may have a problem. Are the disks
well-known brands?
