He's talking about putting the protective glass on the front threaded
ring of the lens shade right where it butts up against the front of
the lens. It is completely surrounded by the entire shade.
However, it does stick out about 3/8 of an inch further than a filter
that is threaded directly to the lens. So yes, there is a wee bit more
chance of flare.
