The problem was not with the camera. The problem was in one of two areas:

Either...

1. You failed to monitor the audio levels while recording. This could have
been an issue at the audio mixer from which you took the feed into your
camera (the audio guy may have been asleep at the switch), or you may have
had the input level on the camera set too high. Somewhere in the chain --
either on the mixer or on the camera -- somebody wasn't monitoring the audio
levels. Digital audio isn't like the good ol' days of analogue tape where
running levels into the red (above 0 VU) would just cause oversaturation of
sound. Anything over 0 VU in the digital world is DOA (Dead On Arrival)
with audio clipping being introduced, and if it's way too loud, just
horrible distortion. It's a function of the medium, not the camera, and
once the sound is captured with distortion, there's not much that can be
done to salvage it.

Or

2. You were taking a line level feed and plugging it into a mic level input
on the cammie. This causes an impedence mismatch that you can encounter
with any camera if you don't know what you're doing. You can buy a
converter at Radio Shack (for under $20) that accepts a line level feed on
one end and converts it to a mic level at the other that can be plugged into
a mic input on a camcorder. It's not the ideal way to work (better to use a
camera that has a switch that enables you to set the inputs to either line
level or mic level; all the professional cammies have it), but this is *A*
way to resolve the issue next time without having to go buy (or rent)
another camera.
