Thanks Charles,
I thought that it might have been the media, as I was using all generic. I
did try the ridata disks, which seemed to be higher quality, and it did
exactly the same. (of course, I have no idea what quality ridata disks
are, but at least they have a name on them).
I think my next step should be to put the drive in another machine, and
make sure the problem isn't because of some bad module in the driver chain.
I sure hate making DL coasters!
