Interestingly enough I saw a brochure today advertising NTL's version of
Sky+ which they said would be available 'later this year'. The new box will
be HD enabled, come with a 160Gb hard drive, and be able to let you watch
one channel while recording two others at the same time.

I think it mentioned HD broadcasts would start some time in 2007 - it said
something like (I'm paraphrasing) 'when more broadcasters will be providing
HD services and HD displays become more affordable'. My guess is that means
when the BBC start HD, as Sky probably want to keep their HD channels
exclusive to their own service for a while.
