If your players can play AVIs, then convert the MPEG2 into XviD AVIs.
A good compromise on size vs resolution is 350 MB file size for 42
minutes content. You can go down to 175 MB file size for 42 minute
content for 19" screen size.

WinAvi is a good choice for converter. So is Auto Gordian Knot.

Otherwise you will have to compress MPEG2 further. Run them thru
VideoReDo with an 8 Mb/s bitrate, turn them into DVD format and use
DVD Shrink to compress them further.
