Now THAT'S a DIY project the likes of what we don't see these days.
Cool. I'll bet it sounded like you were listening with a pice of
plastic tubing stuck in your ear, but it was probably adequate for the
purpose.

There are a couple of mics like that. I've seen them at AES shows but
I've never seen one in use. As I recall, Audio Technica showed one, and
Gefell as well. By adjusting the amplitude and phase relationships when
summing the multiple mic elements, you can adjust the width of the
pattern and even steer it.

They cost more than $69.
