I think the RCA actually predated the 643. And the 643 stayed in the
catalogue for years and years... I know EV was still selling it in the
early eighties.
RCA had a patent on the multiple tube thing, as I recall. It turns out
it's actually not a good idea because there are more narrowband resonance
issues than with a single slotted interference tube. But nobody knew it
at the time.
