There are loads of streaming units, the Buffalo Linktheater, The dlink
Thingy, the Pinnacle Showcenter. I have the Buffalo but was
disappointed to discover its wirelsss networking only has WEP not WPA
so the only way to connect it wirelessly was by downgrading all my
security. Firmware upgrade? Plenty, but none of them to date have
fixed the obsolete security standards issue.

I used to have a Philips Streamium but Ebayed it because it was just
too much trouble for too little result. Did you know PnP machines
*can't* show slides and play music at the same time from their host
PC? It's a limitation of the PnP spec and it really bugs a lot of
people (including me.)

My point is, all the media streamers have glitches in firmware and
usability. Some people rave a bout theirs but spend all day on forums
trying to fix glitches with MP3 playback etc etc.

Have a look at www.nickknows.com under 'Wireless entertainment' for
various machines. But as I say, take all their reviews with a pinch
of salt. All streamers are pretty temperamental compared to a nice
simple stick-the-disk-in-and-play it DVD machine. The KiSS media
streamers (www.scan.co.uk carry them) are very popular but they have
their problems too.

Having said all that I am stil tempted by a Media Centre PC that would
play AVIs straight off the disk. If we didn't already have a TiVo
(all hail) I would have gone that way.
