Speaking on the death of DAT.

Listen to this...

I was called in to record some voice over and ADR the editor wanted for
a cooking show. The editor was in New York City and the shoot was in
Napa, California. They sent a PA with a PD 170 to record the audio. We
set up in the same kitchen that the show was recorded in to duplicate
the ambience. The whole point of doing this gig. I thought, Cool, an
editor that want's to do the right thing!(if possible)

The camera was having problems not loading the tape. The mechanism was
damaged.

So to save the day, I offered my DAT for back up, a DA-P1. When the PA
didn't know what a DAT was, I wasn't suprised. So she got on the phone
with the editor in New York to see if we could do the session to DAT
and if that was alright?

The editor didn't know what a DAT was either!!?? So I got on the phone
and told him that after we get this session on DAT tape, he could rent
a DAT in NY and transfer it into his NLE.

He balked at the suggestion and the shoot day was a total loss. (Still
got paid) Never mind the cost of sending this PA across the country to
duplicate room tone and sending the irate talent back home.
Unbelievable.
