Did you try drag and dropping the file directly to the Bin in a FCP
project?

If the clip will import, you can then select the file and EXPORT it to a
native QT file.

FCP has a lot of internal translation tools that typically work very
well.

If that doesn't work, check out www.versiontracker.com - I'm sure
there's an AVI to QT file translation tool up there.

You'll likely need to know what kind of wrapper and compression the AVI
file was originally created with. DIVX Doctor and/or DivX Tool (also on
version tracker) may help you find out the original file format.
