With $300, Aus or US, your best bang for the buck is to rent a full 3
or 4-light kit and a mic from a local outfit. With purchasing, you
couldn't afford half as much stuff. It will perform so much better
than the cobbled-together home depot work light crap. Not that work
lights can't be made to work, a pro can make most anything work using
their experience and knowledge, but a beginner using macgyver'd tools
is not going to get optimal results without wasting a LOT of time.

Rent over the weekend, and you usually get three days for the price of
two, maybe even one day's rate. And the rental guy will show you in his
shop how to use the stuff for free.
