Well yes and no, but mostly no. VHS looks terrible on my 52" JVC RPTV.
Even 4-hr mode on a DVD-RW looks better than VHS on it. For
timeshifting on a 27" television, the poster may be correct from his
perspective. I still use VHS for recording/replay of news programs in
my office on my 24" tube TV.
I am currently using a Panasonic DMR-EH50S 100gb hard
drive/DVD-R/DVD-RAM recorder on my RPTV for timeshifting and the
occasional archive of a television show to DVD-RAM, then back to my
computer for editing and saving to DVD-R. I have had it since XMAS and
love it. It provides very good progressive scan play back of DVDs and
the OTA captured broadcasts look as good as the original.
