A thought - you could get six JVC GR-D270 at 250 for the price of a
DSR-11. If one is using this an an editing deck in a one-man-band
company, which is the right course to take?
And I reply....
How important is rewind time? DSR-11 is very fast. How important is
cassette easy in and out? Compared to small cameras, which I used for
awhile, DSR-11 requires one hand only and no plug and unplug of in/out
connectors and power connectors just to insert or remove cassette. How
important is ability to play-record to full size DVCAM tapes? DSR-11
acommodates DVCAM cassettes required by some broadcast stations. How
inportant is reliability? I had the transport deck fail on two different
small DV cameras being used as playback transports. The downtime, while
securing a replacement, was an inconvenience to me and my clients. How
about you? If I wanted to sell my DSR-11 it appears that I'll get about 80%
of what I paid for it. What's the % resale on the JVC? Do you view
yourself as a professional, on-going enterprise? Or a hobby business? I
believe that professional equipment is more appropriate for the former for
reasons of ease of use and reliability. Additionally, I believe that my
clients' recognize and appreciate that I do not rely on the same equipment
they use on Saturday mornings to record their children's football games.
That recognition affects the confidence my clients place in me, how they
judge my work, and how they view my billings. Is that important to your
business?
If you are a startup with little capital, the JVC will get you started. If
your clients never attend an edit session, the JVC may not impact on your
credibility. If your pricing is rock-bottom, the JVC is consistent with
that business model.
Only you can decide. If your time-horizon is just a project or two go for a
couple of JVCs. If you expect to be in business for a few years, I'd
recommend the Sony DSR-11.
