Recently been through this. Had a Canon 65mc which I used as a deck.
Decided to get a deck. Thought about the JVC...does not have the best
reviews but a friend has been using one for a few years.

Decided to get a DSR 11 on Ebay. Found one. It lacked a power supply
and remote. Was successful with a bid for $920. After I won I noticed
that the guy wanted cash only and the guy had a user name that had the
phrase idpirates in it. No kidding. The guy wanted cash only and lived
in NYC. (Not that there is anything wrong with people that live
there.)
Now a thousand bucks is a big deal for me; I died a thousand deaths of
paranoia about the deal.

But soon enough, the deck came. I bought a power supply from Radio
Shack for $20 (Sony wanted $150) Got a remote for $50 on Ebay. (A
remote is necessary for all functions.

Worked fine. And it is waaaay better than using a camera for a deck.
And...it does make me feel like a big boy now.

However, if I had to do it again, I'm not sure I would have just
bought one from B&H or another reputable dealer. Would have cost me
about 50% more but there would be no worries. The great thing about
these decks is that the resale value is so high.
