Nope.  FotR was released first as a pair of 2-disc sets (16:9 and 4:3) 
called "special editions", then as a a pair of 4-disc 16:9 
"Platinum Series Special Extended Editions", one of which was the 
"Collector's Gift Set" that also included the Argonath bookends. 
 
I bought only the "Platinum Series Special Extended Editions" for each 
movie, although now I'm sorry I didn't wait and just pick up the 
"Collector's Gift Set" editions...they're only $2 more now, when they 
were $10-20 more at first release.
