Movies are shot on film which runs about 4K resolution, well over 1080p. It
is common, but inaccurate, to believe that films shot on film are for some
reason not HD or are inferior to HD is some way. Movies shot on film are,
in fact, far superior to even the best ATSC video that is currently
available, and movies mastered to HD discs at 1920x1080/24p have about 7
times the resolution of DVD. For people who have 60"+ televisions and 1080p
capability, this jump in quality will be highly noticable, right from the
beginning.

Original HD broadcasts were things like Hogans Heroes, which was shot 20+
years ago onto film. It has been digitally scanned at HD resolutions and
then released as HD material. This was before HD digital cameras basically
were around and provided some of the very first 'true' HD content. Since
then, we have digital HD cameras, but the best quality is still film which
exceded HD digital by a good bit.

If you have ever seen HDTV and then switched to a DVD, it is easy to see the
jump in quality that occurs between the two... and HD discs will be able to
deliver higher quality HD than television broadcasts are capable of.

My opinion: Could care less about Java and the added features it offers. I
care a great deal about getting 1080/24p movies and watching them on a 10
foot screen in my home over a 1080p projector.

Your exact examples: Independence Day, Titanic, and Friends are all shot on
film, and 4K masters have been made which is 14 times plus the resolution of
DVD. If you can't see an improvement, then you need a new TV. :o) Really,
some TVs just won't benefit from it because they are to small or people have
such poor vision they won't notice. But, our 50" plasma sees a difference
between DVD and HD, and when we go up to the projector, the difference is
even more noticable.
