Actually, it has EVERYTHING to do with Blu-ray because Blu-ray (unlike
Toshiba's HDDVD), provides an application environment for Java
applications to run, which allows the features I noted above, like
Chatting, downloading and viewing of new subtitles, interactive menus,
etc. These are all powered by Java (a more powerful version than the
one running on cellphones).
The Java apps are so intertwined with the Blu-ray system that the apps
can synchronize accurately to single frames in the movie.
