If your needs are simple, go down to your local discount department
store (Walmart, Canadian Tire, Zellers, etc), and buy one of the "made
in China" ones they've got for $35 Canadian. I don't know what they
go for in the US, but they're cheap. They're typically pretty
compatible with everything except DVD-RAM discs.

The drawbacks to buying one of those? The players tend to be small
and light, which makes some people uneasy. The remotes have rather
small buttons. Output is only stereo A/V RCA connectors (cables
aren't included).

They're nothing fancy, and you'll never have bragging rights for
owning one, but they work. Also, if you opt for one of these, I don't
think it really matters which you go for except perhaps for warranty
support -- they all seem to come with identical remotes and while the
exteriors are different, the connectors and switches are all in the
same places. I suspect they may all be from the same factory.
