uh, obviously it can't run the apps itself since there is no ENERGY
source until it is in a player, AND the application manager itself runs
on the player. DUH.

ok, i admit that it looks like the disc itself contains no processor
(which would have been cool). however, the relationship of the apps to
the underlying blu-ray disc is obviously tighter (according to the
specs) than simple storage of apps, since the BD-ROM itself (the disc)
contains system software responsible for the interaction of the Xlets
to the underlying movie. In effect, Xlets have a handle on movie titles
on the blu-ray disc via an application table also on the blu-ray disc.
all storage i admit.

but btw, who said i was against modifying the HDDVD player?...if
toshiba were to go ahead and modify the HDDVD so it runs Java just as
well as blu-ray players, i'm all for it. i would cheer them for it.

BUT HERE'S THE POINT OF ALL THIS:

the toshiba HD_DVD players you BUY NOW will NEVER EVER run java
applications. You can do all the IF, ELSE moaning, but the fact is the
toshiba HDDVD players YOU buy with your hard earned cash today is
simply a one-trick pony.

whether toshiba decides to go with java in future does not change that
salient fact.
