Very good points - but what does that have to do with Blu-ray or this topic?
I mean, you are rambling on about the industry and the movie studios and
your personal problems - which are shared by many - with those studios and
the industry.

Blu-ray technology is no moreso the culprit as is HD-DVD, or DVD, or even
VHS. All 4 technologies include copyright proection measures which aim to
block consumers from backing up their discs. And YES, it is illegal in the
USA to sell and market such products as DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter for
those who may want to make legal backups of their discs.

Does it SUCK? Absolutely!

Is this the fault of Blu-ray?

Not at all - which is all I am saying. Make sure your focus is properly
directed towards the industry. Keep especially close to mind that 20th
Century Fox (not Sony) is the primary studio who was calling for the highest
levels of security/copyright protection on the players and that, in the end,
Blu-ray and HD-DVD both have at least allowed for the ITC which means
depending on the STUDIO (not the hardware or technology) can determine
whether you get full 1080i output over analog component.

Nobody, who purchased a TV within the past 3 years who did any research and
planned on potentially upgrading to a HD disc player should be surprised by
this at all. In fact, the HD analog cutoff date was supposed to be last
year, and that would have shut down analog over component for HD from a lot
of equipment as well (broadcast flag).

You are complaining about the choices you want... How about chosing not to
pay taxes? To have sex with any woman you grab off the street? To beat
people at will? To kick dogs? To shoot presidents? Isn't that your
CHOICE? There shouldn't be any repercussions or rules for you as an
individual? Obviously - that is all pretty silly, but the reality is that
every technology has some limitations and some compromises must be met to
bring consumers the best that can be had at the time. Sometimes we don't
like it, and we don't have to ever buy into it if we don't want to.

Fortunately - that's a choice as well.

Wow! It's great to hear there will be lots of CHOICE for me, the
consumer! First off, I CHOOSE to play the disc at high-def resolution
through analog connectors -- or through DVI to a digital device
without HDCP.

What?!? I can't do that?? But that's what I CHOOSE! I have CHOICES!

Oh, well. That's OK, I guess. I was going to buy another $5000 TV
again this year. After all, it's already been two years since I bought
the last one.

Hmm... OK. Back to my CHOICE:

I CHOOSE to make a backup of my purchased disc, as is my right under
copyright law. Should be easy; it's my right under law. Just remove
the copy protection, and... WHAT?!? Removing the copy protection to
make a personal backup is ILLEGAL?? I didn't CHOOSE that! Not my
CHOICE!

Getting a bit miffed. But that's OK; at least I'll now be able to
CHOOSE to watch a disc from Europe in my North American player. Just
pop it in, and.. WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?!? I can't play discs from
other geographical regions in my top-of-the-line, $1500 player?? Why
not? That's what I CHOOSE to do!

I'm no cynic, but I'm beginning to think Blu-Ray's Java bells and
whistles are the industry's CHOICE for distracting consumers from just
how little CHOICE they actually have in how to use and view content
that they purchase!
