Lite-On has to install the proper codecs in order for you to play
AVIs.

AVI is a wrapper for MPEG-4 content. There are several kinds of MPEG-4
content but the two most widely implemented are XviD and DivX.

DivX is proprietary and costs money. XviD is open source and free.
Guess which is more widely used for bit torrents.

I am actually a bit surprised that the cheap player has DivX but
apparently does not have XviD.

My Walmart ILO DVDR05MU1 with Ver 6.10 F/W plays XviD but not DivX.
Since 6.10 is beta F/W for the ILO, I assume the XviD was used because
it is free.

Ask Lite-On.

The above-referenced ILO costs $99.
