Interesting. It had never occurred to me to even _try_ setting any
region restrictions on my DVD-Rs as so many authoritative-appearing
sources - including Jim Taylor's DVD FAQ [1] - claim that it's just
something that can't be done on consumer DVD media.

apply to DVD-Audio, DVD-ROM, or recordable DVD")

I just burned a test DVD using Ulead DVD Workshop 2, leaving only the
"Region 1" checkbox selected in the project settings. After it was done
with burning, I popped the disc in my stand-alone DVD player (which is
multiregion, but currently set to Region 2.) No go: the player
complained about the wrong region. Then tried the same disc on my PC,
using a software-based DVD player, with the same results.
OK, I stand corrected. The sources I quoted are obviously wrong. Thanks
for clearing this up for me.

(The test image was burned on DVD+RW media, which is of course a media
type not officially sanctioned by the DVD Forum, but I think I can take
your word for it if you're saying that DVD-R will behave the same way -
without having to burn a useless coaster just to make sure?)
